What the First Hour Feels Like

Your first hour in IGTAP: an Incremental Game That's Also a Platformer is not an idle-game warm-up — it is a platformer tutorial wearing an idle game's clothes. You will die repeatedly to spikes and fans, finish your first courses for tiny watt rewards, unlock your first movement abilities, and only start to see the exponential machinery near the end of the hour. The Steam achievement statistics give an unusually clear picture of that pacing, and this page maps your first sixty minutes against them.

One expectation to set up front: numbers stay small for a while. The official screenshot of course ONE shows a completion reward of just 2w with 20 Clones — later screenshots show power counters at 2.00Tw, and that gap is the whole journey. The first hour is about building habits (clean routes, sensible purchases) that pay off in hours two through ten.

If you want a sense of the tone before you commit an hour, community first-play videos capture the experience well — including one literally titled "The first hour of IGTAP", played on a PS5 controller against the web demo.

Minutes 0–15: Learning by Dying

The game teaches through death, and the statistics prove nearly everyone goes through it: Tis but a flesh wound ("Die for the first time") is unlocked by 99.7% of players, and You Died… alot (100 deaths) by 80.8%. If you rack up a few dozen deaths in your first fifteen minutes, you are on the median path, not off it.

Your job in this stretch is to finish your first courses and watch the completion panel: Reward in watts, Clone reward mult, Best time, and Clones earned. Courses have numbered names (ONE and FOUR appear in official screenshots; the Vman courses 1–5 come later as a challenge track). Complete a course and your run is preserved as an orange recorded path that your clones replay to generate power.

By the end of this phase you should also have the first movement abilities. Wall jumping (98.6%) and Spintap, the dash (94.7%), unlock early for the overwhelming majority of players, and they change which parts of the facility you can physically reach.

Minutes 15–30: The Economy Starts Turning

Once a couple of courses are recorded and clones are running them, watts begin accumulating in the background while you platform. This is where the two halves of IGTAP start talking to each other: spend watts at the kiosks, get stronger clones, earn watts faster, unlock more movement, record better routes.

The verified kiosk lineup includes +X Clones (+1 per use), +X clone reward multiplier (+0.1 per use), Xx base reward (+1x per use), speed-tier and size-tier chance upgrades (+6% per use each), a global +1 to the maximum possible clone size tier, and Boost all previous courses. In the first half hour, the straightforward picks are clone count and reward multipliers, because they scale the routes you have already banked.

The double jump typically lands in this window too: Jump, but again. sits at 86.9%, which places it firmly in "most players get it in an ordinary early session" territory. Each new ability is a prompt to re-run an old course and record a shorter line — that re-recording habit is the single biggest first-hour skill you can build.

Minutes 30–60: Atoms, Trees, and Bigger Numbers

The second half of hour one is where IGTAP reveals its incremental skeleton. The achievement unlock rates suggest a typical player brushes against several systemic milestones in this window: Overdraw ("Trip the breaker", 66.8%), Polar increments (block polarity swap, 61.5%), I am igtapic. ("Buy your first atom", 61.0%), and Exponential growth ("Plant the upgrade tree", 60.9%).

The atom purchase is the notable one. A kiosk offers to "Turn all of your power into new atoms", priced in the green gp resource (one official screenshot shows 276.51Kgp) — a conversion that trades your entire watt stockpile for a new currency. The 61% unlock rate says most players do take this step in normal progression; the exact returns are not published, so evaluate the trade when you reach it rather than pre-optimizing.

Around the same time you will encounter the upgrade tree (plant it for Exponential growth; fully growing it later earns Environmental Energy at 6.8%) and refresh orbs (Stem Cells, 50.4%). None of these are hour-one requirements — but seeing them exist in your first session sets expectations: IGTAP's real depth is systemic, and the platforming you are doing now is the engine that funds all of it.

If You Stall: Explore, Don't Grind

Almost every stalled first hour has the same cause: the next upgrade looks impossibly expensive, so the player re-runs the same course on autopilot. The consistent advice from community threads on the developer's itch.io demo is different — if the upgrade seems very far off, explore. Secret content is a verified part of IGTAP: Not all those who wander are lost ("Find a secret upgrade") has a 92.1% unlock rate, meaning almost every player stumbles into at least one secret just by poking around.

New movement abilities are the usual trigger. After the wall jump, in particular, demo players report that the game does not clearly point you to the newly reachable area near the start of level one — you are expected to notice it yourself. Whenever your toolkit grows, spend a few minutes revisiting old geometry before you spend another watt.

The full secret-upgrade achievement, Definitely not lost ("Find all secret upgrades"), sits at just 1.1%, so hunting them all is long-term content — but the first few are practically part of the tutorial by unlock rate alone.

How the First Hour Compares to a Speedrun

For perspective on pacing: experienced players finish the whole game far faster than a beginner's first hour would suggest. Community videos show Any% Full Game runs around 19:40 and 18:45 (both labeled as former world records in their video titles — community claims, not officially certified timings), and a Demo Any% around 28:29.88. Even a level 1 record of 1:34 (dated 2026-05-03 per the community video title) shows how much a perfected route differs from a first playthrough.

None of this is a benchmark for your first hour. The gap between a new player and those times is route knowledge and ability mastery, which is exactly what your first sixty minutes build. speedrun.com/IGTAP hosts the verified leaderboard categories, including Any%, if you ever want to watch the ceiling.

The lesson to steal from speedrunners is a beginner lesson too: they win by recording and rehearsing optimal lines. That is literally IGTAP's core mechanic — clones replaying your recorded route — so practicing speedrunner habits early makes both halves of the game easier.

After Hour One

By the end of your first hour, a healthy save looks like this: several courses completed and recorded, clones earning watts in the background, wall jump and dash in hand (double jump likely), and your first glimpse of atoms, the upgrade tree, or a secret upgrade. Anything past that point is a bonus — the statistics show the deeper content thins out quickly, from the omni-dash at 28.5% to escaping the facility (The greatest adventure is what lies ahead) at 5.4% and finishing Vman course 5 at 4.7%.

The road from here runs through the Vman courses, the statue room's global upgrades, secret upgrades, and eventually the B-Side content the community talks about (its official status is unconfirmed). Those are all covered in dedicated pages on this wiki.

If hour one left you wanting structure rather than exploration, continue with the how to start guide for first-purchase specifics and the beginner guide for the full loop — then come back to the numbers when you have felt the game for yourself.
